Historical Background

In Roman society, the Secutor was a type of gladiator. Sometimes, in English, they are called the provocator, pursuer, or challenger. They were mostly bare, having only a visored helmet, a Scutum (oblong shield, oval or rectangular in shape), a gladius (short sword) or dagger, 1 Ocrea (a type of greave) on their left leg, manicae (leather or metal bands/plates) on their right arm, and a wide belt made of leather or metal along with a loincloth. Their helmet was rather unique, guarding their head and face entirely, leaving only 2 eyeholes open. Their primary opponent in gladiatorial combat was the Retiarius. The Secutor debuted around 50 CE.

Like the Final Fantasy XI Job System, all types of Gladiators in Ancient Rome were designed to give balanced and fair matches. They were given some armor (mostly on their left side) and a good weapon. This may make it seem like they outmatched the very strangely equipped Retiarius, but their helmets, which were used to provide protection from being hit in the face by the net, was very heavy and the Secutor would succumb to fatigue if the Retarius was able to draw out the match long enough. The helmet also limited how much oxygen the Secutor could get, leading to them fainting should they exert themselves too much.
