Historical Background[]
In Roman society, the Prætorian Guard were the Imperial Guard, the special military unit designed to protect the Emperor and the City of Rome. They were an elite unit who were given special uniforms (which ironically resembled the soldier's uniform from the Roman Republic, the very entity the Empire replaced) and pay double the rate of other military units... as well as bribes offered as "bonuses" for allegiance. Should the Emperor leave the city to oversee a military campaign, the Prætorian Guard would travel with him. The Prætorian Guard were created by Emperor Augustus in 31 BCE after the Battle of Actium, which gave him control of all of Rome (though he was not named Emperor until 27 BCE when the Empire was formed, he had de facto control over Rome) from his most trusted troops. They were made up of a varying number of cohorts (units). They originally had 9 cohorts with 500 men each, but under Emperor Caligula were increased to 12 cohorts, to 16 cohorts by Emperor Vitellius, down to 9 cohorts again under Emperor Vespasian, and up to 10 cohorts under Emperor Domitian, where it remained for a long time. They were commanded by a Præfectus. They were the only troops allowed to be stationed in Rome or Italia (the Italian Peninsula). Though ordered to protect the Emperor, the Prætorian Guard killed more Emperors than any other cause. Whoever could win the support of the Prætorian Guard had a good chance of becoming Emperor.
