Historical Background[]

Scorpio is traditionally the eighth constellation out of 12 in the Zodiac. It represents a scorpion. It is a Water-element sign and a Fixed sign (signs considered to have determination and stubborn refusal to change their position/view). Scorpio governs the 8th House (rules joint/shared resources, inheritances, corporations, emotional union, sex, death and rebirth/transformation/regeneration) and it is ruled by the celestial body Pluto (It was considered to be ruled by Mars prior to Pluto's discovery in 1930). Scorpius is a constellation bounded by Libra, Sagittarius, Ophiuchus, Corona Australis, Lupus, Norma, Ara. Its named stars are (Alpha to Lambda, excluding Gamma [Gamma Scorpii became Alpha Librae] & Zeta, Eta, Iota): Antares, Acrab, Dschubba, Wei, Sargas, Girtab, Shaula. The constellation Scorpius originally had much larger claws, but those claws were removed to form the constellation Libra (see Ophiuchus for more on this matter). The Zodiac sign is said to be associated with eagles, serpents, and Phoenixes. Traditionally, people born from October 23 to November 22 are considered Scorpios. Scorpius is Latin for "scorpion".

In Greek mythology, the constellation Scorpius represents the giant scorpion, Skorpio (Greek for "scorpion") sent by the Earth goddess Gaia to slay the mighty hunter Orion, who was killing all the animals of the Earth. As such, Orion and Scorpius are constellations which appear on opposite horizons. As one sets, the other rises.
